What Einstein got wrong in this quote:
“If I had an hour to solve a problem, I’d spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions.”
One of the first lessons I remembered from my coaching course was the order of GROW and the reasons why.
GROW stands for Goal, Reality, Options, Will/Way forward.
It’s GROW not just because it’s a better acronym than RGOW!
What I learned is if you start with your current reality, you’ll limit the goal you think is possible.
Your reality is absolutely important when thinking about what you must do next to achieve your goal.
However, we are too well rehearsed in our current reality and the problems we experience.
We understand our problems and current reality in great detail – we argue for it, we live there.
We’ve already spent the 55 minutes thinking about our problems.
We don’t need more time there!
If we cannot articulate what we want, we’ll never come up with the solutions to make it happen.
Where is your attention when you’re trying to solve something?
Experiment with getting clear on what it is you want instead and spend more time there.
Notice what happens.
You develop in the direction you look.
Sorry Einstein!
